Turning Views Into Followers
Why do people follow? It’s a way to ensure you can consume more content from this creator in the future. Meaning it’s a dedication to your content.
Not all people follow immediately. This is actually a good thing. If they don’t follow immediately they value their follow action more meaning that when they do follow they are more likely to come back to your stream.
There will always people that follow thousands of streamers and then will immediately follow you as well, but these people are not as likely to come back to your stream as you are competing for their attention with thousands of others that are live when you are.
For some people it takes multiple streams to click on the follow button. To make it more likely for those people to find you again I would recommend having a streaming schedule. If you are live at the same time every week, then you are most likely also going to be live whenever the viewer has free time to watch streams. If you play the same game again as you did last stream that will also increase the chances of the viewer finding your stream back. If they come back a second time to chat, they are almost guaranteed to follow.
A good way to make someone follow is to make someone feel a connection to the content. As you are the streamer you are the content. So if you can make a personal connection with this viewer they are more likely to follow. You can do this by asking questions or interaction with their chat messages. Bringing things up that they said in the past is going to get you extra points!
Some people might also just forget there is an option to follow. I sometimes join friends via Discord as I see their purple dot next to their name and know they are live on twitch.
Video on how to get the purple dot next to your name in Discord.
However I when I join via Discord I forget to follow them sometimes. So I could’ve been watching them for half a year and not followed them. The way to fix this is with a call-to-action. Just tell them something like ‘Don’t forget to follow if you like the stream.'
Maximize your profile space! People do browse your about section. Meaning that if you write something about yourself and your stream that people find recognizable or interesting they are more likely to follow or to ask questions. And like I said before; asking questions is a way to engage with the viewer and make a connection with them.
I don’t want you to focus too much on getting a lot of followers as it does not matter how many followers you have. What matters is the quality of the followers. If you have 10 followers that come every stream it’s a lot more valuable than 100 that never show up.
I would recommend the book Superfans as they go over how 1000 fans could already get you a great income and you do not need a million followers to live from.
